Cybercrime has become a growing threat in recent years. While there is no such thing as perfect security, Google wants to make the web safer for everyone. The company has launched a Cybersecurity Action Team with the goal of supporting the security and digital transformation of businesses and governments around the globe.
This is an important move for Google, which has seen attacks on its own systems grow in recent years. It will help Google better target the growing threat of cyberattacks. The new group will build on the work Google has already started with its Advanced Protection Program, which offers targeted security for high-profile users to address the threat of state-sponsored attacks. Google’s parent company Alphabet has also launched Chronicle, which verifies the security of hardware chips. Google’s new cybersecurity team joins the ranks of other major tech companies with similar teams, including Facebook, Microsoft, and Salesforce.
The Cybersecurity Action Team will compile security experts from across the corporate. it’ll provide strategic advisory services, trust and compliance services, engineering services to assist customers to deploy Google Cloud and threat intelligence and incident response services.
Recent cyberattacks, including those on Colonial Pipeline and SolarWinds, demonstrate the necessity for better cybersecurity efforts, Google said in its blog post. the corporate in August announced it might spend $10 billion over subsequent five years to strengthen its cybersecurity efforts, and therefore the new cybersecurity team is a component of that program.
Cybersecurity is at the top of every C-level and board agenda, given the increasing prominence of software supply chain exploits, ransomware, and other attacksThomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud
Most cybersecurity experts applauded the new Google team, saying more research and cyber-defence efforts are welcome. Google’s announcement may be a “nice step.” Still, companies also got to specialise in security as software is being developed, said Peter McKay, CEO of Snyk, an open-source security company for app developers.
“At the top of the day, nothing truly changes if the industry doesn’t embrace developer security and make better use of the world’s growing developer population,” he told the Washington Examiner.
The world faces several cybersecurity challenges, including a shortage of qualified cybersecurity experts, he added.
Attackers are getting more sophisticated, driving customers and legislators alike to hunt ways to force companies to properly protect their data. Unfortunately, cybersecurity can’t be solved by simply pouring money into it. Per annum, we see companies like Google increase security, and yet the amount of breaches across industries only grows.McKay
While Google’s new effort is primarily focused on supporting its Google Cloud customers, the corporate is probably going to share important information with the broader market, said Dean Coclin, senior director of business development at DigiCert, an encryption vendor. Google has been open with sharing research from initiatives like Project Zero, he noted.
Given the increased hacking events reported within the news, and particularly with large ransoms paid to criminals, cybersecurity is top of mind for each. Google is making an enormous investment in defensive and compliance measures to point out organizations that they’re serious about thwarting potential threats and keeping companies safe. We see this as a positive sign which will help companies protect their tip.COCLIN, CHIEF INFORMATION officer
In August, Google’s investment announcement came alongside a White House initiative to pump up the nation’s cybersecurity efforts. Several other companies announced new efforts at an equivalent time.
While it’s unclear whether Google’s investment would have happened without this event, it’ll certainly be welcomed by companies battling their IT security. Because hackers still exploit weaknesses in IT infrastructure and therefore the high-profile attacks that have resulted, we expect more companies to hitch Google and Microsoft in announcing cybersecurity measures within the coming year.COCLIN
However, some IT experts raised questions on what proportion the Google team will specialize in its large customers.
Many of Google’s consumer-oriented products haven’t seen the maximum amount security attention as they probably should have. The main issue is that this new team may focus too closely on existing Google Cloud customers and not correctly [on] other companies and businesses who threaten their and their users’ security.
